ニセコに魅せられた2人の夢が叶うまで

2017年春。北海道のニセコモイワにハンドメイドのスノーボード工場を設立したジョシュとリチャード。彼らは、故郷オーストラリアのサーフカルチャーからインスピレーションを得て、カスタムできるスノーボードを実現しました。サーフボードの様にオーダーするスノーボード、という新たな価値観が、僕たちをより自由なスノーボードへと導いてくれると信じています。

オリジナリティ溢れるスノーボードブランドを創り上げた2人に、ニセコやブランドについて詳しく聞いてきました。

INTERVIEW OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPES

10年がかりで築き上げたゼロからのスノーボードブランド

moro : ジョシュ、リチャード。僕たちが初めて出会ったのは、確か2004年の冬だったよね。現在のニセコモイワが、ニセコ ラ・ポンテだった時の仕事仲間だった訳だけれど、君たちはいつからニセコで滑っていたの？
Josh,Richard.First time, we met at here, The era of Niseko La-ponte, 2004? How long have you been riding in Niseko?

Richard :そうだね、僕らが出会った年のニセコは最高だったね。雪が多くてアブシンス・クルーも撮影に来ていた(DVD、POPが撮影された年です)。毎日、滑って飲んで…それだけで大満足だった。ジョシュは2002年、僕は2004年に初めてニセコに来たんだ。それから13-15年、毎年来ているよ。僕たちは世界中どこにでも行くことが出来たけど、日本に住むことの素晴らしさとニセコのディープパウダーに魅せられたんだ。他に行く理由は見当たらないよ。
We did meet then. Those were our best years. Ride, Smoke and Drink. Nothing else. Haha. Josh first came to Niseko in 2002, and has returned every year since. So 15 years. Richard started coming in 2004, and has come back every year. So 13 years. We could go somewhere else, but the combination of Japanese living and deep powder ties us to this beautiful place.

moro : 懐かしいよ。毎シーズンニセコに行けば、君たちに会う事が出来た。当時から”いつか、自分たちの手でスノーボードを作るんだ”って言っていたけど、正直、誰がオーストラリア人が作ったスノーボードに乗るんだよ！って思っていたよ。だって、道産子がサーフボード作ってオーストラリア人に売り込むようなストーリーだからね。でもそれを実現した君たちは本当にすごいよ！では、OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPESを僕たち日本のスノーボーダーに紹介して下さい！
Every year of winter, I could meet you guys at Niseko. From that time, You said “someday, I’m going to make a snowboard!!”. Actually, I thought Who care about that? Does anyone ride snowboards witch made by Australian ? Because, Its like we make surfboards, and sells these on Australia. But you done. Heartiest congratulations. Please introduce OFF SHORE SNOWSHAPES for Japanese Snowboarder！

Richard : ありがとう。全てはジョシュのビジョンだったんだ。大変なことは沢山あったけど、彼が維持したモチベーションのおかげで、やり遂げることが出来た。ゼロからスタートして、今に至る全過程に携わることが出来たことを嬉しく思うよ。ジョシュは、スノーボードが雪の上でどの様に反応するかを知り尽くしている。そして僕はアイディアを形にすることが大好きなんだ。日本語という言葉の壁を乗り越えて、この工場を完成させたことを誇りに思っているよ。
OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPESを一言じゃ語りつくせないけれど、例えるなら日本食のようなものかな。最高の食材を選び、慎重に組み合わせて調理する。そして美しいお皿に盛りつけて最高の環境の中で味わうんだ。僕たちが作るスノーボードも同様に、良いソール、良いコア材、良いファクトリー、そして良いクルーによって作られている。更に、ショップや乗り手のモチベーションも加わる。僕たちは、選び抜いた要素が凝縮した妥協のないスノーボードを紹介したいと考えているんだ。
Thank you, this was a vision of Josh’s. He followed it through. It is amazing to watch. He has a really deep relationship with boards and how they work on the snow. Richard loves to make anything, but most of all he loves supporting his friend and overcoming the challenges of language and business associated with starting a boutique snowboard factory in a location as remote as Moiwa, Japan. As for Offshore itself, there is a million things we could say, but like good Japanese food, simplicity and respect is key. We choose the best ingredients, and carefully combine them to complement the boards we shape and the environment they are ridden in.

生産コストをかけてでも、ニセコのスノーボードシーンを深めたかった。

moro : 世界中から雪を求めて多くの人が集まり、ビッグブランドもひしめくニセコエリア。この場所でOFF SHORE SNOWSHAPESの様なインディペンデントブランドが生まれる事はセンセーショナルだし、それが君たちだなんて僕にとって喜ばしい事だよ。
There are so many visitor, and so many big brand gather in Niseko. It is a very sensational and very good for the Japanese born the independent brand, such as OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPES in this place. What do you think about that?

Richard : ニセコエリア一帯は今、ローカルやビジターのインバウンドで経済的に急成長していて、スキー・スノーボード業界を含めた小売やサービス業が潤っているよね。日本人の友人達もここでビジネスを成長させて、一年中ニセコで仕事ができる環境を作っているよ。過去(2000年代初頭)には、ニセコにいつも仕事がある状況ではなかったから、素晴らしい変化だよ。
ニセコでは、全てのビジネスが巨大化して、僕たちのような外国人が住みやすくなったけれど、一方で地元のスノーボードカルチャーを深めるような発展は、ほとんどなかったと感じているんだ。シーンを深めようとしているのは地元の数少ないスノーボード職人やガイド達。ごく僅かなんだ。ましてウェスタンでは誰もいなかった。僕たちがモイワにスノーボード工場を作りたいと話すと、ほとんどの人が笑って「宿泊施設やコンビニを作れ」と言ったよ。
もし、OFF SHORE SNOWSHAPESのボードをニセコで作らなければ、コストを約5倍安くできるんだ。経済的にはその方が良いだろうけど、それは僕らの意思ではないし、目標でもない。夢でもないんだ。今、僕たちは自分たちが乗りたいボードを作ることができて、それを目の前の山ですぐにテストできる環境を整えた。家族や友人もニセコのディープスノーを心から楽しんでいる。様々な種類のボードを乗り倒しては日々、話し合っているよ。協力してくれる彼らに雇用を生むこともできた。ニセコで少しでもこの業界に貢献出来たことは、価値のある一歩だと感じているよ。
We have seen many locals and foreigners cash in and help grow the retail and service side of the ski and snowboard industry in Niseko. On one side, it is great to see all of our local Japanese friends businesses grow and for them to have jobs all year round. In the past, good work was not always available here. This has let us all live and work here more easily, but at the same time very little has been done to deepen the local snowboard scene? When we said we would build a snowboard factory in Moiwa, most people laughed and told us to build accommodation or a convenience store, because there is more money in accommodation and services. Everything has gotten bigger here, but no one is really growing the core snowboard scene. Only the few people making homemade snowboards are helping to deepen the riding and board making culture here in Niseko. The Red Bull Yuki-Ita competition last seasons was a great example of this. The thing is, we could get our boards made anywhere in the world, 5 times cheaper than we can do it here. It’s a better decision economically, but it is not our dream and it doesn’t have the same feeling. Now we can build whatever we want, and test it whenever we want. Even better, is that all of our friends and family can come and enjoy the beauty of Moiwa, its deep snow and ride all different kinds of boards to find the one that works for them. We add to that experience. They love it, and we love seeing them love it.

マナーが悪い外国人にうんざりしてる？
僕たちも同じ気持ちだよｗ

moro : 日本人を代表して質問するよ。ここ数年で多くのビジターがニセコを訪れている。でも僕たち日本人は引っ込み思案な性格だから、ニセコを避ける様になって来た。移住した外国人にとっては最高な環境があるけれども、俺たちはどうしたらいいだろう？
I will listen frankly, recent days there are so many visitor in Niseko, right? we Japanese charactor is very shy. So, somebody became to avoid Niseko. Although it is the best environment for foreigners who are immigrating, What should we do in Niseko? （it not serious）

Richard : 僕たちだってシャイだし、同じ問題に直面しているよ。君たちと同じ様にウェスタンにはうんざりしてるんだw 2002から2004年の2年間が忘れられないよね、ニセコは静かでウェスタンを見かけては声を掛け合うような雰囲気だったんだ。そしてモイワには午後からでもパウダーがあった。今、ニセコエリアに集まる旅行者は、みんな休暇で訪れていて、日常からかけ離れた世界を楽しんでいる。休暇中はエキサイトするし、普段のテンションとは違うよね。
今まで僕たちオーストラリア人含む多くの外国人が、地元住民に迷惑をかけているのは事実だよ。僕たちはなるべく奥に奥に、人を避ける様にして遊ぶことを心がけている。もちろんルールに沿ったやり方でね。ここにはスノーボーダーが望む環境が全て揃っている。世界で最も良い素晴らしい山々に囲まれているんだ。とても幸運なことにね。みんな、もっとポジティブな気持ちでスノーボードに行こうよ。大きなパウダーターンをしてさ！
We are also shy, so we face the same problem. People come to this natural wonder for a holiday. Most people are a bit loose on holiday, and are not the same people they are at home. They can be a bit louder and a little less considerate, because it is their holiday! In many ways we are sorry for all of the bad behaviour and loudness of foreigners in Niseko, particularly Australian’s. We actually loved niseko in 2002 and 2004, because it was so quiet and not so many people. But it has changed and there isn’t much we can do except embrace it. What we do is find a place like Moiwa, do our own thing, and avoid the crowds by hiking in the backcountry or riding on Moiwa on a quiet day. We have a great group of close friends, and we have everything a snowboarder could ever want. We are so lucky to be here in one of the most beautiful places in the world, so how can we worry about such things. I suppose we just focus on the positives and go snowboarding. Actually, Just go snowboarding… do a big powder turn and everything will be alright.

サーフカルチャーに影響を受けたスノーボードへのアプローチ

moro : ブランドネームの“オフショア”は、サーフィンから来てるよね。オーストラリアにはハードなサーフスポットがたくさんあって、君たちは世界をリードする本物のサーフィンがバックグラウンドにあるスノーボードブランドだけど、OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPESを手に取るスノーボーダーに何か伝えたい事はある？
You guys have true background what is surfing. “OFF SHORE”means come from SURF. There are so many hard surf point in AUS, Do you have message for snowboarder who choose OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPES?

Richard : サーフィンとスノーボードは完全に繋がっているんだ。それは、サーフィンを国技とするオーストラリアで育った、という僕らの環境もあってね。幼いころから、世界で最もヘビーな波を経験してきた。そして僕たちの地元には、たくさんのサーフボードシェイパーがいたよ。マーク・リチャーズ、ボブ・ムクタビッシュ、サイモン・アンダーソン、ホット・バダード、ヘイデン・シェイプス、ルーク・ショット・デザイン(LSD)アロハ、ラスティ…僕たちはそういった地元シェイパーの工場のドアをノックしてサーフボードを手に入れてきたんだ。昨年も5~6本揃えて乗ったんだけど、最高に楽しいボードだったよ！マジックボードにも出会ったんだ。サーフィンをする人なら必ずあるでしょ？あのボードは特別だ、っていうヤツ。そんなイメージで、ニセコでもスノーボードのマジックボードを探していたんだ。カスタムサーフボードの様に、オーダーできるスノーボードを求めていた。
ニセコをベースにしたスノーボードブランドはごく僅かだけれど、ものすごくインスピレーシブなブランドと出会ったよ。自分達とは違うアプローチでサーフスタイルを追い求めていたし、よりマイルドなライディングスタイルを代表していた。僕らはやがて、自分達でスノーボードを作りたいっていう気持ちになっっていったんだ。絶対に人を惹きつけられるという自信があったし、何より、僕たちの工場で正しい工程で作っているところを実際に見てもらいたかったんだ。カスタムボードには将来性を感じているよ。日本のみんなにもマジックボードと出会ってほしいし、もっと探求して欲しいんだ。
The connections between surfing and snowboarding are clear. This connection is inside of Josh, so it was natural that he called the company this. It reflected who he was. Beneath that though, there is a more visible history. Both of us grew up surfing some of the world’s heaviest and best waves, and all around us were hundreds of small surfboard shapers. Mark Richards, Bob Mctavish, Simon Anderson, Hot Buttered, HaydenShapes, Luke Short Designs, Aloha, Rusty etc. Literally hundreds of surfboard shapers. Both Josh and Richard have always bought their surfboards from local shapers. In the last year they have used maybe 5 or 6 different boards custom made by different local shapers. It makes surfing so much fun and so interesting. You always remember that magic board, and hope that you will find another one. Its part of the search. When Josh and Richard started riding here, they were suddenly on the the world’s best powder, but only one person was shaping boards around here then, Gentem. An inspirational brand, but Gentem were really hard to access, and they represented a more mellow style of riding, that didn’t correspond with the way we had grown up surfing. Josh was also searching for that magic board, and he saw a future in custom shaped snowboards, mainly because it could bring the fun and interest from riding custom surfboards to snowboarding. Our customers have also benefitted from this surf/snow approach because making so many custom snowboards, has allowed us to develop a few magic boards that are sold in our line of stock boards. So this approach to board development has also helped us evolve as a company. It is this approach and connection to surfboard riding culture, that defined our childhood, which continues to define Offshore today.

moro : サーフィンとスノーボードをどの様に繋げている？
How do you connect SURFING and SNOWBOARDING?

Richard : 前の質問でカバーしていると思うけど、僕らが考えるサーフィンとスノーボードの共通点についてもう少し明確に説明するよ。どちらも”レール(スノーボードではエッジ)”でコントロールができる。それが僕らに必要な自己表現ツールなんだ。そして人と人を繋げる役目もあるし、ライディングから生まれるインスピレーションや歓喜がある。バレルに入っている人も、ディープパウダーに入っている人も、リッピングしている人も、みんな同じ気持ちなんだ。中にはこうしてスノーボードやサーフカンパニーを起こす人だっているんだよ。（確かに、あちこちにサーフボードがあるスノーボードファクトリーだった。）
I think we kind of covered it in the question above, but maybe we can make it a little clearer. Both craft slide on water, both have two rails, both rely on feeling, both are modes of self expression, and both are super fun. They embody and reflect the people we are, and introduce us to people who are like us. We live for these sports, and the lifestyle that comes with them. They are inseparable, they are the same. Each informs the other, be it making a turn deep in the pocket of a wave, slashing a windlip or starting a snowboard company.

とことんユーザーと向き合うオープンなスノーボード創り

moro : 北海道初のスノーボードファクトリーを、僕たち日本人の一般スノーボーダーでも見学できる？また、カスタムボードのオーダー方法は？
It might be the first snowboard’s factory in Hokkaido. And build under the foot of Niseko Moiwa. Could we Tour the Factory? And where Could we buy these boards?

Richard : 北海道初だと確信はしていないけど、間違いなくニセコ・モイワエリアでは初のスノーボード工場だよねw 工場見学は大歓迎だよ。夏でも冬でも、事前に予約してくれるなら喜んで時間を作るよ！僕らは工場を公開して、スノーボードを作るプロセスを実際に見てもらう事に誇りを感じている。カスタムボードのオーダーは、札幌だとMOJANE、ニセコだとリズム・スポーツ、白馬エリアでも受付けているよ。
もちろん、オンラインでも提供している。たくさんディスカッションを繰り返して、ユーザーにとってより良いボードを完成させるよ！(彼らは日本語を話すことが出来ますが、細かな要望やイメージを伝えるには英語の方が確実かもしれません。不安があれば取扱ショップを通したり、英語が堪能な人の力を借りてオーダーするとスムーズです。)
We are not sure about Hokkaido, but It is definitely the first snowboard factory in Niseko, Moiwa, and Moiwa is our home, so that makes us very happy. The fact that we get to run it is a bonus. You can tour the factory anytime, Winter or Summer. Just make a booking with us the day before so we can make time for you, and we would be happy to show you the snowboard making process and all of the great materials that are used in our boards. We will be selling stock and custom boards through Mojane, Sapporo, and stock boards through Rhythm Sports, Niseko and Hakuba. moro : OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPES2017-2018シーズンのラインナップを教えてください。
Please tell me about Line up of 2017-2018 season.

Richard : 僕たちは今シーズン5つのシェイプを用意した。様々なコンディション、地形で乗れるように設計しているけども、サイズ、フレックス、ベンド等のスペックはモデルに合わせて作っているよ。
“Cabin Fever”は、大きなターンをしたい人にお勧めしているんだ。細いシェイプが特徴だから、いつもよりも少し長めでオーダーしてもらいたい。”Sea Biscuit”は、モイワでの絶大なパフォーマンスを約束するよ。ディープ・パウダーのポンポンマッシュを飛ぶなら最高なボードだね。ジョシュは”Snurfs UP”が好きだって言ってるよ。ハイパフォーマンスのミッドレングスボード（ミッドレングスはオーセンティックな形状で作られたパウダーボードと、現スノーボードシーンでは欠かせないショートパウダーボードの中間を意味する）。
僕はRUSSのシグネイチャー”RUSS WINFIELD”が特にお気に入りだよ。テールデザインに特徴があって、飛びやすい、跳ねやすいツインシェイプに仕上がっているUNCLE RUSSからも「長いキャリアの中で1番だ！」っていうお墨付きをもらったよ。ニセコローカルでOFF SHOREのチームライダーを努めるGAKU(永田 学さん)は”HALF BAKED”のターン性能が気に入っているみたい。
カスタムボードでは、それらの特徴をベースに、オリジナルの構成をチョイスしていくんだ。OFF SHOREには”カーボン・フラックス・ピン”や”カーボン・パワーコード”といった技術があって、オーストリアのISOSPORTS社の高グラファイトレースベースにアップグレードすることだってできる。ボードのフレックス、ベンディング、コアの厚みを調節する事も可能だよ。そして、トップシートには名前を刻印するよ！サーフボードの様にね！本当のオリジナルスノーボードを手にしてもらいたいんだ。
On the stock side of things, we have chosen our best 5 shapes and offer them in a range of sizes, flexes and camber profiles. All of these boards are designed to be ridden on all types of terrain, but some suit bigger open turns, like the Cabin Fever, whilst others are better suited to tight turns in the trees, transition and jumps, like the Sea Biscuit. Choosing a favourite shape, is like choosing your favourite child, you probably shouldn’t do it, but deep inside Josh’s personal favourite is the Snurfs Up, because it rides so much like a high-performance short snowboard, whilst Richard’s is the Russ Winfield, because it has so much advanced technology and is a jump friendly, super responsive all round board. On the custom side, it is amazing. Customers get to choose any of our shapes and build it how they like. They can choose any of our special technologies, such as carbon-flax punt pins and pretensioned carbon power chords, they can upgrade to a high graphite content race base made by Isosports, Austria, or they can change the flex and camber profiles on their boards. The options are limitless. The best bit though, is that the board comes with their name printed into the top sheet. It is their own Offshore Pro-Model.

個性派が揃ったチームライダーについて。

moro : ラッセル・ウィンフィールドがチームライダーに居る事にすごく興奮したよ！スノーボードファンとして、彼がOFF SHOREのチームに入った経緯を教えてよ。
I really exited about Uncle Rass join a team of OFF SHORE! I really want to hear how did him get involved with OFF SHORE SNOW SHAPES.

Richard : RUSSは僕たちにいきなりメールをくれたんだ。それも普通の顧客のような文書でね。思い切って僕は訪ねたんだ。”Would you be Russel Winfield ??”ってね。YESって答えが返ってきたときは、そりゃもう震えたよ!! そして彼はOFF SHOREに家族とともに来てくれた。彼はOFF SHOREを別次元へ連れてってくれる存在だよ。
Russ wrote Josh a private message asking if we could build him a board. Just like a normal customer. Josh, asked if it was the legendary Russ Winfield. It was. It was a very cool moment. From that moment on Russ was brought into the Offshore family, and he helps us to go places we never thought possible.

moro : そして、アンクル・ラスの他にも超個性的なライダー達が揃って居るよね、今シーズンの活躍が楽しみです。
And, There are also other wonderful team rider other than him. I really look foward to their activity.

Richard : そうだね、OFF SHOREはいろんなスタイルがミックスされたライダーで構成されている。チャーリーとトミーのスタインバッハブラザーズ、そしてジェイク・マカーシー、彼らは母国の英雄たちだよ。彼らを見るたびにとてもエキサイトしているんだ。彼らは、ボードのフィードバックと開発を手伝ってくれている。TREVやGAKUのような地元のレジェンドライダーも、とてもカッコ良いんだ。僕たちがここに来て以来、ライダーや仲間と共にに意見を交換しあう事がとても重要だと考えている。彼らには本物の知識があるからね。最近ではカーティス・ウッドマンをチームに加えた。彼は情熱的な冒険家だよ。美しいスノーボードスタイルをもっていて、すぐにOFF SHOREには不可欠な存在になった。彼らと過ごす新しいシーズンもすごく楽しみだよ。
僕たちは地元の日本人ライダーにも興味を持っているんだ。もし、OFFSHOREが気になったら声をかけてほしい。僕たちは常にチェックしているよ。
Yeah, we have a cool mix of riders. At our core are rider’s like Charlie Steinbacher, Tommy Steinbacher and Jake McCarthy. These are our homegrown heroes. The boys we love to watch ride at home. The boys who gave us the most feedback on our boards and helped us to develop our range of boards. Then we have local legends, like Trev Ponting and Gaku Nagata. Older guys whose riding style have shaped us as riders since we first started coming here. Rider’s whose opinion and feedback is very important to us. We also recently added Curtis Woodman, a rider whose passion for life and adventure reflects us as people, and whose riding style is as original as it is beautiful. We look forward to another season with all of our team, and can’t wait to add a few women to our team as well as some more local Japanese riders.
